Cataract – We have modified the technique of vitrectomy to prevent cataracts. Our results show that in contrast to an 87% incidence at other centers, we have 23% after 1 year and only 40% after 2 years. No one under the age of 53 has required cataract surgery after limited vitrectomy for eye floaters. Curiously, it only develops in patients who’ve had FOV vitrectomy for floaters and NOT in patient who have undergone vitrectomy for other causes. In 23 years, I’ve never had a patient complain of “frill” after having vitrectomy for other reasons. You are right, many obsess over the “frill” though the floaters. Even if the retinal tear is repaired, the blood left in the eye can stain the translucent vitreous floaters and make them more opaque which makes them more bothersome. Of course, the main concern when new vitreous floaters develop is that it might be associated with a new retinal tear, and, hence, a possible subsequent retinal detachment.
